I’m as shocked as anyone that I adored this。 Part of the reason is that Alice and Felix’s relationship greatly resembled one of mine that just ended。 Another is that the question of how you plan a future with someone you love when the world is ending is one I ask myself a lot。 A third is that Rooney really went for it with this one。 It’s bold and pretentious and the characters actually say what they’re feeling to each other。 The dynamics are messy and the sex is unbelievably well written。 Her pr I’m as shocked as anyone that I adored this。 Part of the reason is that Alice and Felix’s relationship greatly resembled one of mine that just ended。 Another is that the question of how you plan a future with someone you love when the world is ending is one I ask myself a lot。 A third is that Rooney really went for it with this one。 It’s bold and pretentious and the characters actually say what they’re feeling to each other。 The dynamics are messy and the sex is unbelievably well written。 Her prose is still a bit of a snooze to me, but everything else was so rich here that I don’t mind。 The ending was life affirming and made me cry。 Okay I’m done embarrassing myself here byeeee 。。。more

« What if the meaning of life on earth is not eternal progress toward some unspecified goal—the engineering and production of more and more powerful technologies, the development of more and more complex and abstruse cultural forms? What if these things just rise and recede naturally, like tides, while the meaning of life remains the same always—just to live and be with other people? » 💙

Well, if you weren’t depressed before reading this book, you will be after reading it。 I listened to this one (the narrator was excellent btw, but even she couldn’t make up for the droll content)。 I was using this as a distraction for laundry and weeding, but more often than not, the weeds and dirty clothes won。 It was also hard to keep track of which character was whining when the chapters changed since the two females had similar personality flaws。 That being said, there’s no way I would’ve fi Well, if you weren’t depressed before reading this book, you will be after reading it。 I listened to this one (the narrator was excellent btw, but even she couldn’t make up for the droll content)。 I was using this as a distraction for laundry and weeding, but more often than not, the weeds and dirty clothes won。 It was also hard to keep track of which character was whining when the chapters changed since the two females had similar personality flaws。 That being said, there’s no way I would’ve finished this book had I been reading it。 Ok onto the content: Let’s see, what made book this so awful? Unlikable characters? Check。 Unrequited love for 99% of the book? Check。 Lengthy self-absorbed rants about how life was hard? Check。 Cringe-worthy romantic encounters? Check。 No action of any sort? Check。 But were there funny moments to off-set it? No。 A glorious happy ending? Also no。 A semi-state of contentment for the last 15 min of the book is all the reader/listener is left with & that in no way off-sets 9+ hours of unnecessary torment。 The only likable lead was Simon and I think that’s just because he NEVER complained!! (Even though he probably had the most reason to because all the other characters were SO annoying!) You know a book is bad when a main character is crying at the end of it, saying she can’t go on and you’re thinking to yourself, “Neither can I!” 。。。more

Maybe we're just born to love and worry about the people we know, and go on loving and worrying even when there are more important things we should be doing。 And if that means the human species is going to die out, isn't it in a way a nice reason to die out, the nicest reason you can imagine? Because when we should have been reorganising the distribution of the world's resources and transitioning collectively to a sustainable economic model, we were worrying about sex and friendship instead。 Bec Maybe we're just born to love and worry about the people we know, and go on loving and worrying even when there are more important things we should be doing。 And if that means the human species is going to die out, isn't it in a way a nice reason to die out, the nicest reason you can imagine? Did not like parts of this book。 Boring。 I liked the ending so am giving it 3 stars。

I don’t get the hype of this book…weird story, weirder characters。 Not every book is for everyone, I guess。

Ok I didn't love it there were parts I didn't like but the characters are witty which I enjoyed & it was oddly a very timely read for me that would def resonate with the mid-20s to 30s adulting experience Ok I didn't love it there were parts I didn't like but the characters are witty which I enjoyed & it was oddly a very timely read for me that would def resonate with the mid-20s to 30s adulting experience 。。。more

It’s a common romance but super well written。 I really enjoyed the characters, I felt their emotions 100% and that’s all thanks to Sally Rooney。 This isn’t my type of books, but for her, I’ll open an exception because I really have a good time reading it。

Like her other books, this one reads itself very easily as well, but nonetheless it's the last of Rooney's 'work' I'm willing to put up with; her repeated romanticising of communism through her characters really betrays her own class-privilege and detachment from reality。 Let's be clear, indulging in the ideals that emerged from the hey-day of the Soviet Union is not a cute character-quirk that make your female protagonists more interesting。 It makes them tone-deaf and obnoxious。 No person in th Like her other books, this one reads itself very easily as well, but nonetheless it's the last of Rooney's 'work' I'm willing to put up with; her repeated romanticising of communism through her characters really betrays her own class-privilege and detachment from reality。 Let's be clear, indulging in the ideals that emerged from the hey-day of the Soviet Union is not a cute character-quirk that make your female protagonists more interesting。 It makes them tone-deaf and obnoxious。 No person in their right mind who 's had the misfortune to be the product of such a system revels in its memories - ask anybody born after 1945 in Central-Eastern Europe。。。Growing up in an authoritarian socialism makes you desperate to get out of it at best and mentally cripples you for life at worst。 Nobody said the other extreme, i。e。 casino-capitalism was the answer, but the fact that she seems to think that the only way she can write intellectual ('oh-so-deep!') female characters is to have them glorify different bits of marxist manifesto really speaks to the author's own inability to recognise that, yes, it can indeed get worse than existing in rentier capitalist Dublin。 I am generally not a fan of the idea that authors are a reflection of the characters they write, but in this case, can't help but speculate that Rooney herself is just as entitled and obnoxious as the heroines she conjures up on the page。。。 。。。more

This book was gorgeously written。 I loved the characters and am always enthralled by Rooney's work。 At times, some tangents felt unnecessary and tedious, yet it was still insightful and interesting。 It felt validating and yet heartbreaking。 Overall, I have to praise Rooney for her genius。 It is awe-inspiring。 This book was gorgeously written。 I loved the characters and am always enthralled by Rooney's work。 At times, some tangents felt unnecessary and tedious, yet it was still insightful and interesting。 It felt validating and yet heartbreaking。 Overall, I have to praise Rooney for her genius。 It is awe-inspiring。 。。。more

This was disappointing。 I felt like it tried to be so clever, discussing big ideas and grand theories, but in such a meaningless and superficial way that it just didn’t seem real to me。 Who really writes letters to friends like that? Maybe it’s autobiographical? Not sure, but it didn’t seem relevant to me。I didn’t connect with any of the characters, and I needed more plot。 Listening to 4 flawed individuals who didn’t really do anything other than complain about each other wasn’t entertaining

3。5 StarsI have such an intense love/hate relationship with Sally Rooney’s writing and this was no different。 I hate the characters so much, yet I find myself in nearly every one and can’t stand it。 The characters are also still intricate in their own right, despite having no plot to follow along。 If I could, I would rate this book a question mark

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I waited months to loan this book from the library and having just finished it, am so disappointed。 To be fair, this is my first Rooney novel and I’ve concluded that I’m not a big fan of her writing style。 I also found the characters completely unlikable and their relationships unhealthy and lacking chemistry。 I was expecting more of a fun “coming of age” novel, and am left feeling underwhelmed。

Well, just like world and just like people I meet in the world。 Messy, confused, divided, connected, want to but afraid, lost, hidden; it's the reflection of today's world in a more included way。 what else can I say? It's messy and they're figuring it out, just like us。 Well, just like world and just like people I meet in the world。 Messy, confused, divided, connected, want to but afraid, lost, hidden; it's the reflection of today's world in a more included way。 what else can I say? Sad day, as I turn in Beautiful World, Where Are You to the library。 Sally Rooney has a chokehold on me, though Normal People will always be my favorite。 In Beautiful World, I find it funny that Alice, as a writer, says, "Maybe and then we would finally have to confront how wrong, how deeply philosophically wrong, the current system of literary production really is-how it takes writers away from normal life, shuts the door behind them, and tells them again and again how special they are and how Sad day, as I turn in Beautiful World, Where Are You to the library。 Sally Rooney has a chokehold on me, though Normal People will always be my favorite。 In Beautiful World, I find it funny that Alice, as a writer, says, "Maybe and then we would finally have to confront how wrong, how deeply philosophically wrong, the current system of literary production really is-how it takes writers away from normal life, shuts the door behind them, and tells them again and again how special they are and how important their opinions must be。" Sally Rooney is praised for being one of the best authors at writing about 'real life' and I think this puts into perspective the reality of the distance between 'normal' and fame, even [especially] in modern literature。 。。。more

I enjoy Sally Rooney's writing style but I never connected to these characters。 I usually gravitate to relationship based novels with interesting characters。 Perhaps if I read it at a different time it may have been a different experience for me。 I enjoy Sally Rooney's writing style but I never connected to these characters。 I usually gravitate to relationship based novels with interesting characters。 Perhaps if I read it at a different time it may have been a different experience for me。 。。。more

i love sally rooney but she really needs to use quotation marks in her novels!! i genuinely loved many parts of this book。 meanwhile, other parts were not as great。 for example, the run on paragraphs。 i get the feeling she’s trying to capture but it really took me out of the story。 the characters were great but the structure in general felt lacking。 idk normally i like the “no plot just vibes” but this just felt a little too structurally disconnected for me

Jet Bain

this is my first book I’ve read of hers (shouldn’t have started with this one)。 The writing was excellent, but where is the plot? Absolutely none to be found。 Seems like she was kind of just writing any and every “woke” subject she wanted to, felt very cheap。 And the cheapest part of all was the ending。

Isabella

2。5 stars。 I loved Sally Rooney’s Normal People and her style of writing in that one, but for Beautiful World I felt like the characters and their relationships/interactions were so boring。 Maybe it’s because I couldn’t relate to them, but I had to force myself to finish the book。 I’ll still give “Conversations with Friends” a try, though。
